Revelation Of Doom: Shemhamforash

04/12/07  ||  Kampfar

Is Revelation Of Doom a doom metal band?

Nope.

These here Poles, some of the few not working in Norway, are in fact a couple of hundred blasts away from said genre, instead mixing up a lethal dose of death and black, with a dash of thrash thrown in for good measurement. The idea is original as cock in pussy, but let me assure you, this bunch of Slavic hate mongers makes up for being unoriginal by turning in an effort swathed in blood and sweat. To such a degree, in fact, that I bet my fucking ass at least the drummer is on speed. Fucking ace, mate. Not that I’m into uppers, but I’m glad you are.

When I first listened to “Shemhamforash”, I was very fucking sure repeated listens would kill the thrill, not enhance it. The latter of course happened, and though I haven’t found a symphonic orchestra “hidden” in the mix, it has become evident that ROD has a better understanding of how to make blistering fast metal than the lot. Fuck the lot, let them rot. Wow, I just sunk down to their level. Anyway, ROD seldom does that, and how they avoid ending up as the sorry majority, is by sporting song writing talent. You know, not only equipped with the ability to come up with good riffs and passages, but also able to mend them bits together so that they form into a cohesive whole.

Impressive.

Those who hate blasts have probably already left the building, and that’s good, ‘cause they won’t fucking like this album. For those still left, I’d like to add that ROD isn’t entirely stuck in high gear; they have the brains to throw in mid-tempo sections, ones effectively eliminating the monotony without killing the intensity. Some nice, wicked solos are also present, though I sure as death would have liked to hear a couple more of those.

This band, unlike Six feet under, for instance, is also fortunate enough to have a vocalist with more than just a basic understanding of how to do extreme vocals. He has the range of a trained sniper, not like one of those legends, but a good one, putting his heart into whatever style he do. He is a very good addition to the squad, but so is the rest of the lads.

The reason I’m this positive about “Shemhamforash” is not because it’s a possible classic, not even close, but ROD have made the most out of a basic formula, a formula battalions bands have fucked up majorly before them. And will continue to do so until there is no more electricity left humming. Those who haven’t experienced shitty lots of tedious blast fests are either very young or on too hefty drugs; or, of course, never cared for such angry and violent music in the first place. You homo you.

I recommend this effort.

7 out of 10.
